Connotation/Denotation @ Mrs. Dowling's Literature Terms

Hello Students!

Please read through this webpage. Then respond to the 10 questions on a separate piece of paper (you may type if you choose). Then print out the practice quiz at the bottom of the page and complete the quiz.

Do NOT complete any of these activities online - that will send the results to Mrs. Dowling, a teacher in Virginia who certainly has no idea who you are!

Myths of Creation assignment

  • In addition to the Greek myth of creation which we read in class, please read three additional myths, choosing from the selection below.
  • Create a table comparing the mythological elements of the four myths. I have included a link clarifying the elements common to many myths of creation - you may use it as a reference to create your table.
  • You will enter this table into your mythology notebook. You may want to keep the table on a separate sheet for now, until you decide how you want to put together your notebook. Inn any case, this assignment will be in the Quickwrites section of your notebook, so follow the guidelines for Quickwrites in the rubric (that is, the table must include the date of the assignment and be at least 3/4 of a page long). Make sure to title your work as well.
Elements of Creation Myths

Choose three of these myths:

Wichita

Odin and Ymir

 Kono Africa

Ancient China

And just for the sake of redundance, here is the Greek myth of creation once again:

1/05/11 Homework

Dear English 9 students,

I finally feel that I am over this horrid bug, so I am really looking forward to seeing you tomorrow! Hope you've been enjoying the movies ;-)

We are going to have to do a little catching up, but it shouldn't be too bad!

  1.  On Friday, you will have a content quiz on the first three myths: Zeus, Hera, Athene. Please review those myths.
  2. On Monday, you will have a vocab quiz on the Week One from the list that I posted to the blog the other day.
  3. Please print out the following for your binders (literature section):   Myth Notecards
 That's all for now!
See you tomorrow ~
Dr. Fleming

1/03/11 Homework

Dear English students,

I have been pretty sick, but hope to be back on my feet tomorrow!

Please download the following document, which is our vocabulary for the next month. Learn the Week 1 list for the quiz next Monday. You will be required to be familiar with both the mythological reference and the modern usage.
Myth Vocab Weeks 1-4

Of course, your OMAM paper is due tomorrow. We will do some peer editing tomorrow, and the second draft will be due on Friday.

Tomorrow (I hope!!), we will also talk in general about mythology and why it is important to us today.

'Til then,
Dr. Fleming
